Canada Bans 324 Assault-Style Firearms in Gun Control Push

Canada has announced a ban on 324 assault-style firearms as part of its ongoing efforts to tighten gun control laws. The move is aimed at reducing violence and crime, and also seeks to support the Ukrainian people in their fight against Russia’s invasion.

The ban, which was announced by Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc, includes investments in border security to combat smuggling and trafficking, and tougher penalties for gun traffickers. The restrictions will be implemented immediately, with the goal of shoring up gun control laws in Canada.

The latest restriction builds on previous bans, including a 2020 ban of over 1,500 firearms, which was later expanded to include more than 2,000 models. The government argues that these types of weapons have been used to commit atrocities and do not belong in Canadian communities.

Defense Minister Bill Blair said the move is one step towards supporting Ukraine’s efforts to counter Russia’s invasion. “Every bit of assistance we can offer to the Ukrainians is one step toward their victory,” he stated. The ban is seen as a significant step forward in Canada’s gun control efforts, and will likely have implications for gun manufacturers and dealers.
