A man convicted of stabbing British author Salman Rushdie in 2022 has been sentenced to 25 years in prison, the maximum possible term. Hadi Matar, 27, was found guilty of attempted murder and assault for the knife attack that left Rushdie blind in one eye. The attack occurred at a lecture in New York, where Rushdie suffered wounds to his liver, arm, and eye.
Matar also received a concurrent seven-year sentence for stabbing another man on stage with Rushdie during the same event. Before sentencing, Matar claimed Rushdie “wants to disrespect other people” but expressed disagreement with this statement. The native New Jerseyan is still facing federal terrorism charges, which he pleaded not guilty to.
Rushdie described his attacker as a “murderous shape” and said it felt like something from the past trying to drag him back in time. A $4 million bounty was placed on Rushdie’s head by Iran after he wrote his novel “The Satanic Verses”, which sparked worldwide protests and death threats against him.
Rushdie’s attacker, Hadi Matar, will face 25 years in prison for the attack that left him permanently injured.
