Kristen Stewart made her highly anticipated directorial debut at the Cannes Film Festival on Friday night, and it was a momentous occasion for the actress. The Chronology of Water, a film adapted from Melissa Scott Lincoln’s memoir, premiered to a standing ovation that lasted four-and-a-half minutes.
Stewart beamed with pride as she hugged her cast members, including Imogen Poots, Thora Birch, and Earl Cave, in celebration of their work together. She also expressed gratitude to the audience, stating that she left everything on the screen. The film, produced by Scott Free Productions and Ridley Scott, was filmed in Latvia and Malta over six weeks in 2024.
Stewart’s passion project was a labor of love, with the actress adapting Yuknavitch’s memoir herself with co-writer Andy Mingo. She has spoken about her desire to direct for years, even as a child. “I think I was nine years old,” she said. “This is my fucking first draft… We’re running in here half-dressed.”
In her introduction, Stewart called The Chronology of Water a radical act of love and thanked the audience for their presence. She also paid tribute to Yuknavitch’s book that inspired the film.
Stewart joins several other high-profile actors making their directorial debuts at Cannes this year, including Scarlett Johansson and Harris Dickinson.
