NWSL Reaffirms Player Safety Protocols After Savy King’s Collapse

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) has announced that future games will be abandoned if players experience life-threatening emergencies during matches. The decision comes after Angel City player Savy King collapsed on the field during a match on May 9, leading to a prolonged medical response.

King underwent surgery for a heart abnormality discovered after her collapse and is recovering positively. The league acknowledged that the game should have ended immediately after King’s collapse and expressed regret that it continued.

The NWSL Players Association welcomed the league’s announcement, stating that it represents a meaningful step forward in prioritizing player safety. The players’ association had previously called for games to be abandoned in similar situations, citing the importance of prioritizing player health over competition.

Many players from both teams expressed relief and gratitude for the medical attention King received on the field. Players from Angel City FC and Utah Royals FC showed support by locking arms at the center circle after the match.

The league’s decision highlights its commitment to ensuring player safety and well-being, particularly in emergency situations. The NWSL will review and refine its protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
