Charter Communications has agreed to acquire Cox Communications in a $34.5 billion deal, merging the two companies to form one of the largest cable providers in the US.
The combined entity will retain Charter’s headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, and maintain a significant presence in Atlanta, Georgia. Cox, the country’s third-largest cable company, will contribute its residential cable business to Charter Holdings, an existing subsidiary partnership.
With over 32 million customers across 41 states, Charter is one of the top three cable companies in the US. The acquisition comes as consumers increasingly shift away from traditional cable TV and internet services towards streaming platforms.
The deal requires approval from both Charter shareholders and regulators. Charter CEO Chris Winfrey will become president and CEO of the combined company after the transaction closes, while Cox CEO Alex Taylor will serve as chairman.
The proposed merger is one of the largest in over a year, following deals announced by Mars and Exxon Mobil last summer and in late 2023, respectively.
