Australian Citizen Sentenced to 13 Years in Russian Jail for Fighting Ukraine

Australians have long been critical of Russia’s treatment of Oscar Jenkins, a 33-year-old Melbourne man who was fighting alongside Ukrainian forces against Russian troops. In a shocking turn of events, Mr. Jenkins has been sentenced to 13 years in prison by Russian authorities, according to prosecutors.

The Australian government is “appalled” by the sham trial and sentence given to Mr. Jenkins, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong said. The government is working with Ukraine, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and other partners to advocate for his welfare and release.

Mr. Jenkins was captured in December while serving alongside Ukrainian forces in the Donbas region. Russia considers foreigners who have travelled to fight in Ukraine as mercenaries, which allows them to be prosecuted under Russia’s criminal code rather than being treated as prisoners of war.

The Australian government has repeatedly called on Russia to release Mr. Jenkins, citing concerns for his welfare and safety. In February, new videos of Mr. Jenkins were posted online showing him alive but frail and potentially suffering from a broken arm.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has expressed support for Mr. Jenkins, stating that Australia would continue to make representations to the Russian government on his behalf. A Moscow-based human rights group has also suggested that Mr. Jenkins could be released as part of a prisoner swap between Australia and Russia.

The Australian government is urging Russia to treat Mr. Jenkins in accordance with international humanitarian law, including humane treatment. The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade continues to provide consular support to Mr. Jenkins’ family.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen whether the Russian government will release Mr. Jenkins or continue to hold him captive.
