Savvy King, a 20-year-old defender for Angel City in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), has undergone successful heart surgery following a collapse during a match against Utah Royals on Friday. The young player fell to the ground in the 74th minute and received lengthy treatment before being transported to California Hospital Medical Centre.
A follow-up examination revealed a heart abnormality, prompting King to undergo surgery on Tuesday. After the operation, she is now resting and recovering with her family, with an excellent prognosis according to Angel City officials.
King’s family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from players, staff, fans, and the community, saying they are “blessed” to share that Savy is recovering well. The match resumed after a 10-minute delay, although some questions were raised about the decision to resume play during her treatment.
