US President Donald Trump said Friday that the US has given Iran a proposal for a nuclear deal, warning the country that it faces “violence like people haven’t seen before” if negotiations fail.
The proposal comes as Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned this week that the US is at a critical moment to curb Iran’s nuclear program. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently reported that Iran’s stockpile of 60% enriched uranium had grown alarmingly from 182 kg to 275 kg, approximately 401 pounds to 606 pounds.
Rubio described Iran as “90% of the way there” in terms of becoming a nuclear weapons state. He warned that if Iran decides to develop a nuclear weapon, it could do so quickly due to its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium.
The US and Iran have held four rounds of talks since Trump took office, primarily in Oman. The president also stated that the US and Iran “sort of” agreed on terms for a nuclear deal. However, Congressional Republicans are urging Trump to remain committed to a hardline Iran strategy, calling for the complete dismantlement of the regime’s nuclear enrichment capabilities.
