Measles Exposed at Newark Liberty International Airport, Health Alert Issued

A visitor from out of state who had measles has raised health concerns at Newark Liberty International Airport, according to the New Jersey State Health Department. The traveler was present at Terminal B between 12:30 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Monday.

Those exposed may develop symptoms up to June 2. Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease spread through coughing and sneezing, lingering in the air for two hours even after leaving the room. Symptoms include a high fever, runny nose, watery eyes, and a red rash that appears at the hairline.

The CDC reports that 97% of reported US cases in 2025 are among unvaccinated or partially vaccinated individuals. As of May 9, 1,001 confirmed measles cases have been reported across 31 states, with 126 hospitalizations and two deaths.
