Nvidia Readies Modified Hopper Chip for Chinese Market

Nvidia plans to start shipping a modified Hopper-series chip to customers in China in the coming months, as the US tightens export restrictions and Huawei expands its AI chip offerings. The new chip will be a downgraded version of the Hopper series, without high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is typically used for AI and supercomputing tasks. Instead, it will utilize GDDR7 memory, a type compliant with US export regulations. This move aims to help Nvidia stay competitive in the Chinese market despite growing competition from Huawei.
