Angel City defender Savy King has undergone successful heart surgery after collapsing during a National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) match on Friday. The 20-year-old fell to the ground in the 74th minute of the game against Utah Royals, prompting medical personnel to administer CPR.
After being stretchered off the field with an oxygen mask, King was transported to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles for further tests. The results revealed a heart abnormality, which was surgically addressed on Tuesday night.
In a statement, Angel City confirmed that King’s prognosis is excellent and she is now resting and recovering surrounded by her family. Her family also released a statement expressing gratitude to the medical staff and players who provided care during her recovery.
The match resumed after King was taken off the field, with both teams joining together for a prayer circle to offer support. The incident has sparked questions about the decision to pause the game in favor of King’s health.
