Multnomah County health officials have confirmed a case of tuberculosis at Lane Middle School in Southeast Portland. A person who was contagious for up to eight months between September 3, 2024, and May 1, 2025, is believed to be the source of the outbreak.
The county has notified approximately 23 people who may have come into contact with the individual during that time period. While there is a risk of transmission, officials stress that most people will not become infected and can be effectively treated with medication.
Symptoms of active tuberculosis include coughing, chest pain, and coughing up blood or phlegm. The disease typically affects the lungs and was once the leading cause of death in the US. To prevent serious illness, officials encourage those who may have been exposed to seek free blood tests through the county’s Tuberculosis Clinic.
The Oregon Health Authority reported 87 cases of tuberculosis statewide last year, with a second consecutive annual increase. Multnomah County typically sees around 30 cases annually.
