Carbs Over Protein Linked to Better Health by 70

Eating high-quality carbohydrates may be key to better health by age 70, according to new research from Tufts University. The study of over 47,000 women found that those who consumed more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables had a lower risk of developing chronic illnesses such as cancer and heart disease.

In contrast, refined carbohydrates like pasta, added sugar, and chips were linked to a higher risk of unhealthy aging. Women who ate more than 5% of their daily calories from high-fiber carbs were 30% less likely to experience memory problems or physical limitations by age 70.

The researchers found that eating more protein instead of carbs may not be as beneficial for longevity, and that swapping in high-carb foods like beans and oats could improve overall health. The study suggests that focusing on whole grains, fruits, and vegetables can lead to better health outcomes over the long term.

While the study has limitations, it provides evidence for a diet rich in whole grains, beans, and produce. As Dr. Andres Ardisson Korat notes, “the more we can understand about healthy aging, the more science can help people live healthier for longer.”
