Alex Ovechkin Announces Plans for 21st NHL Season

Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has confirmed his intention to return to the team for his 21st NHL season, despite breaking Wayne Gretzky’s career goal-scoring record earlier this spring. Ovechkin turned 40 in September and has one season left on his five-year, $47.5 million contract.

In a joking tone, Ovechkin mentioned joining the minor league Hershey Bears for their playoff run, but ultimately emphasized that he must secure a roster spot at 40 years old. He plans to maintain his training regimen during the offseason and assess his situation before making any decisions about his future beyond this season.

Ovechkin’s impressive performance this past season, which included overcoming a broken leg to score 44 goals, earned him praise from teammates and coaches alike. Coach Spencer Carbery noted that Ovechkin’s leadership and individual achievements were key factors in the team’s success.

As Ovechkin looks ahead to next season, he expressed his desire to work towards another championship, stating that he wants to lead the team to a Stanley Cup victory. With his contract set to expire, Ovechkin remains uncertain about his future beyond this season, saying “I haven’t thought about it yet” but expressing his commitment to doing his best.

Longtime teammate Tom Wilson echoed Ovechkin’s determination, predicting that he will continue to excel and potentially break even more records.
