World Press Photo Suspends Attribution for Infamous Napalm Girl Photo

A recent documentary has challenged 50 years of accepted journalism history by questioning the authorship of the iconic “Napalm Girl” photograph. The photo, taken in 1972 during the Vietnam War, depicts a naked nine-year-old girl fleeing a napalm attack and was originally attributed to Nick Ut, a Vietnamese photographer for the Associated Press. However, an investigation by World Press Photo has found that the photographer may have been Nguyen Thành Nghe, who sold the photo to the AP on a freelance basis. The suspension of attribution only applies to the authorship of the photo, and the 1973 World Press Photo award remains undisputed.
