The wait is over for sky watchers in Central New York, as the Northern Lights are predicted to return this month. A massive solar flare, which triggered a coronal mass ejection, will create ideal conditions for a spectacular nighttime display.
After being absent from the region since October, Central New York can now catch another glimpse of the aurora borealis. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) forecasts several days of non-stop auroras, increasing chances of actual sightings.
The most favorable dates for viewing the Northern Lights are expected to be from May 24 into Monday and again on Wednesday. However, if these dates prove cloudy, Central New York’s chances increase at the end of the month.
According to NOAA, heavy auroral activity is predicted on Wednesday, May 28, through Sunday, June 1, with the view line encompassing all five dates across New York. The new moon phase will also make the skies clearer for viewing. While this display may not be as intense as last year’s, it promises to be a beautiful sight.
