Crypto Insider Sentenced 14 Months in Prison for SIM Swap Scam

A federal judge has sentenced Eric Council Jr. to 14 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit aggravated identity theft and access device fraud. Council, part of a group that compromised the US Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) X account through a SIM swap attack in January 2024, earned around $50,000 from similar attacks.

The judge also ordered Council to serve 36 months of supervised release. This is not the first high-profile case involving cryptocurrency figures; former Celsius CEO Alex Mashinsky was recently sentenced to 12 years, while the trial of former SafeMoon CEO John Karony continues in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
