Russia has launched its largest drone attack since the full-scale invasion began in Ukraine, targeting several regions including Kyiv where one woman died. The attack came ahead of a scheduled call between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday morning.
According to Ukraine’s air force, 273 drones were launched by Russia, with 88 intercepted and 128 going astray without negative consequences. The strikes killed one person in the Kyiv region and injured at least three others, including a four-year-old child.
The attack is seen as an escalation of tensions ahead of the call between Trump and Putin. The US President has been urging a ceasefire, while Russia’s terms for negotiations include Ukraine becoming a neutral country, cutting military supplies, and abandoning NATO membership ambitions.
The latest drone attack is the largest since February when Moscow launched 267 drones on the third anniversary of the invasion. Germany’s Chancellor Friedrich Merz said he would have a virtual meeting with Trump before the call with Putin, while Ukrainian officials believe Russia may be planning to carry out an intercontinental ballistic missile launch overnight.
