Jennifer Lawrence Openly Discloses Postpartum Isolation in New Film

Oscar-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence has spoken candidly about the “extremely isolating” effect of the postpartum period while promoting her new film Die, My Love. Directed by Scottish art-house filmmaker Lynne Ramsay, the psychological drama follows a mother’s descent into psychosis as she struggles to cope with the demands of caring for a newborn.

Lawrence, who gave birth to her first child in 2022 and is pregnant with her second, drew from her own experiences of postpartum anxiety and depression. “There’s not really anything like postpartum… it’s extremely isolating,” she said. “The truth is, extreme anxiety and extreme depression are isolating no matter where you are. You feel like an alien.”

In the film, Lawrence portrays a character who is struggling to balance her own emotions with those of her newborn daughter. Her co-star Robert Pattinson, who became a father in 2024, said he was drawn to the complex role because it resonated with his own experiences as a new parent.

Die, My Love is Ramsay’s second film to explore the darker side of motherhood, following her critically acclaimed 2011 feature We Need to Talk about Kevin. The film is based on Argentine writer Ariana Harwicz’s novel of the same name and premieres at the Cannes Film Festival.

Despite the intense emotional demands of playing a character with mental health issues, Lawrence says having children has made her a better actress. “I didn’t know that I could feel so much,” she said. “My job has a lot to do with emotion… they’ve changed me creatively.”
