Undersea Volcano Near Oregon on High Alert for Eruption

A massive undersea volcano near Oregon is on high alert as scientists predict an eruption in 2025. Located 300 miles offshore, the Axial Seamount volcano has been growing since its last eruption in 2015 and shows signs of increased magma inflation. Despite being thousands of feet below the ocean’s surface, the volcano poses no danger to people.

Volcanologists monitoring the volcano from Oregon State University are tracking the buildup of pressure inside the volcano, which they say will eventually lead to a crack opening up and lava spewing out. The eruptions can last between days and months and expel enormous amounts of lava into the ocean.

While the eruption itself won’t affect humans on land, it could have significant implications for marine life and ecosystems. Researchers hope to deploy an unmanned submersible to witness the eruption and gather valuable data.

The Axial Seamount volcano has a history of frequent eruptions, with dating showing that it has erupted about 50 times over the last 800 years. Scientists are eager to study this natural laboratory to test theories and make safe predictions.
