FDA Approves Natural Food Dyes Amid Proposed Ban

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved three natural food dyes for use in retail products. These dyes, derived from algae and dried flower petals, replace Blue No. 1 and Blue No. 2 on the list of potentially banned colors. The new approvals include Galdieria extract blue, butterfly pea flower extract, and calcium phosphate.

The FDA’s decision comes after a proposed ban on seven food dyes, including Red No. 40. Unlike the proposed ban, the FDA approval allows manufacturers to immediately incorporate these natural dyes into their products. The agency reviews evidence around each substance’s safety before approving it for use.

Registered dietitian Jessica Ball notes that food dyes are often misunderstood as being unhealthy. However, the science behind their safety is limited, and ultra-processed foods containing dyes should be consumed in moderation. A balanced eating pattern, regular physical activity, social support, stress management, and quality sleep have a greater impact on overall health than food dyes.
