LOS ANGELES — After thousands of auditions, a lot of hope, heartache, and eliminations, the season finale of “American Idol” came down to two singers. Breanna Nix was eliminated, narrowing it down to John Foster, an 18-year-old college student from Louisiana, and Jamal Roberts, a 27-year-old P.E. teacher from Mississippi.
The judges praised both contestants, with Carrie Underwood saying Jamal had all the facets of singing. Luke Bryan noted he came to every performance like a sporting event, working hard and playing great in the game. Lionel Richie also praised his toolbox of skills.
In the end, Jamal won over 26 million votes, more than double last year’s finale. When given the news, Roberts said it was an Oscar moment for him, feeling grateful and thankful to have achieved his dream.
Roberts credited his win to his kids, hometown, and state of Mississippi. Both finalists expressed contentment with their journey on “American Idol,” with Nix saying she felt 100% peace and satisfaction, while Foster said the show helped him find his path in country music.
