Wes Anderson Slays Trump’s Tariff on Foreign Movies with Witty Humor

Wes Anderson skewered Donald Trump’s proposed tariff on movies shot abroad at a Cannes press conference for his new film “The Phoenician Scheme,” questioning how it would work. The director poked fun at the idea, saying, “Can you hold up the movie in customs? It doesn’t ship that way.”

Anderson was discussing his film with a sprawling cast of regulars, shot partly in Germany, where he initially thought Trump was giving them a plug or something. However, when asked about tariffs, Anderson explained that the 100% tariff would take all their money, leaving no clear solution.

The film features Benicio del Toro as business magnate Zsa-zsa Korda and Mia Threapleton as his estranged daughter, Sister Liesel. Del Toro praised Anderson’s direction, calling it “magic” in the editing room.

Anderson also revealed that he is working on a new script with Roman Coppola and Richard Ayoade, but kept details under wraps. He teased future collaborations with Michael Cera and Bill Murray, confirming their involvement in his next films.

The film will have a limited theatrical release starting May 30 from Focus Features, expanding wider June 6.
