Social media platform Bluesky is testing a new feature during the ongoing NBA playoffs, allowing users to seamlessly watch live games on other platforms while still experiencing the event in Bluesky.
When an NBA game is in progress, a red border with “live” designation will appear around posts from the NBA’s account on Bluesky. Users can click on the NBA’s profile picture to be redirected to the live event, even if it means leaving Bluesky.
Bluesky’s COO Rose Wang stated that the platform aims to encourage users to discover what’s happening on Bluesky without trapping them in the app. Unlike Twitter, which relied on advertising and licensing deals for sports content, Bluesky doesn’t have a direct financial stake in user time spent on its platform.
This approach allows Bluesky to steer users toward watching live sports on other platforms, rather than shelling out millions for rights to stream certain games. The company is also testing this feature for WNBA games, marking an investment in its utility for sports fans.
By embracing a more flexible approach, Bluesky can maintain its value as a resource for sports enthusiasts to react and engage with real-time updates during games or trade rumors.
