A lip reader has revealed what Pedro Pascal told Joaquin Phoenix after he pulled down the actor’s waving hand during the 2025 Cannes Film Festival premiere of their film Eddington. The interaction, caught on video, showed Pascal grabbing Phoenix’s arm and pulling it down before advising him to “act cool.”
According to NJ Hickling, a lip reader who broke down the interaction for DailyMail.com, Pascal told Phoenix he was “affecting the cred” – likely referring to the perceived authenticity of his wave. Pascal then suggested Phoenix try to act more confident, like he’s about to score.
Phoenix responded with a brief pause and then breathed, “Oh my goodness,” seemingly acknowledging the comment and perhaps even laughing at it. The exchange has sparked debate online, with some speculating that Pascal was trying to prevent misinterpretation of Phoenix’s wave as the Nazi salute.
The film Eddington, in which both actors star, releases on July 18.
