Mysterious White Streak Over US Skies Identified as Rocket Launch

A mysterious white streak of light was spotted over the US skies on May 17, leaving skywatchers puzzled and awestruck. The streak was initially thought to be a rare atmospheric phenomenon called STEVE, but it was later confirmed to be caused by a rocket launch.

The incident occurred when a Chinese company, Landscape, launched its Zhuque-2E methane-fueled rocket from China’s Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center on May 16. The rocket carried six satellites into orbit, including a radar spacecraft and space science payload. As the rocket re-entered the Earth’s atmosphere, it dumped fuel, creating a bright white streak of light visible in the sky.

Photographers captured the event, with one photographer, Mike Lewinski, describing the scene as “a bright streak of light reminiscent of a rocket re-entry.” Astronomer Jonathan McDowell confirmed that the streak was caused by the rocket’s upper stage passing over the US Four Corners area at an altitude of around 155 miles.

The incident is not the first time a rocket launch has left skywatchers scratching their heads, but it highlights the importance of tracking and predicting space launches to avoid confusion. As the US and other countries continue to launch satellites into orbit, it’s essential for astronomers and space enthusiasts to stay informed about these events.
