Google Brings Speech Translation to Google Meet

Google has announced a new speech translation feature for its video conferencing platform, Google Meet. The feature is powered by Gemini, which can translate what users say into their conversation partner’s preferred language. The AI-generated translations preserve the sound of the user’s voice, tone, and expression.

The beta version of the feature is currently available to users who subscribe to the AI Pro plan or the new AI Ultra subscription, priced at $249.99 per month. In a demo, an English speaker joined a call with a Spanish-speaking colleague, with the translation feature dubbed over their conversation in real-time.

Currently, Meet can only translate between English and Spanish, but Google plans to add support for Italian, German, and Portuguese in the coming weeks. This new feature competes with Microsoft Teams’ AI translation feature, which was launched earlier this year.
