The European Union will review its agreement with Israel due to growing concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, said EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas. A “strong majority” of foreign ministers, 17 out of 27 members, backed the review, which aims to ensure Israel complies with human rights clauses.
The decision comes as international pressure on Israel increases amid complaints about lack of aid reaching Gaza and a new military offensive launched by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. Kallas described the situation in Gaza as “catastrophic” and urged immediate, unobstructed, and scaled aid to alleviate the crisis.
Under the current association agreement, which came into force in 2000, the EU and Israel agreed on respecting human rights and democratic principles. However, a Dutch foreign minister’s proposal for review raised concerns about Israeli policies exacerbating the humanitarian situation and alleged plans for reoccupation of parts of Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon.
The EU has prepared sanctions against violent Israeli settlers but has so far been blocked by Hungary. The review is seen as a powerful signal by officials from France and Ireland, while others suggest holding a meeting with Israel under the association agreement to raise concerns.
