George Wendt, Cheers Star, Dies at 76

George Wendt, best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson in the popular sitcom Cheers, has died at 76. Wendt passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday morning, according to his family. He was a beloved actor, comedian, and family man who left an indelible mark on television.

Throughout his career, Wendt earned six consecutive Emmy nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series. His character Norm became a staple of the show, appearing in every episode and delighting audiences with his lovable bar regular antics.

Wendt’s impressive resume extends beyond Cheers, with notable appearances in movies such as Dreamscape, Forever Young, and Gung Ho. He also starred in Michael Jackson’s iconic music video Black or White, alongside Macaulay Culkin. The late actor was married to fellow actor Bernadette Birkett since 1978, with whom he had three children.

Wendt reunited with some of his former Cheers cast members at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards in 2024, including Ted Danson, Rhea Perlman, Kelsey Grammer, and John Ratzenberger. He is survived by his family and will be deeply missed by fans around the world.
