Microsoft’s Build developer conference kicked off with a series of updates on agentic AI, a technology that enables humans to delegate tasks to autonomous agents. According to Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott, the number of daily active users of its AI agents has more than doubled since last year.
Agentic AI is defined as “a thing that a human being is able to delegate tasks to,” according to Scott. The technology aims to improve the efficiency and productivity of developers by providing them with reliable AI-powered tools. Microsoft demonstrated new features, including the Azure SRE agent for site reliability engineering, which will be embedded in GitHub Copilot.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, made a virtual appearance to discuss the evolution of agentic AI and the launch of Codex, an AI startup’s new agent designed to assist programmers with writing code. Elon Musk, Tesla and xAI CEO, also appeared virtually to talk about his experiences with Microsoft software and Grok’s capabilities.
Microsoft announced plans to expand its AI models available through Azure, integrate xAI’s Grok 3 and Mini, and introduce “Copilot Tuning” to create agents using company data. The company is working to apply AI across the full stack of software development and agentic web products.
CEO Satya Nadella emphasized that the ultimate goal is to fuel ambition by creating opportunity through technology. He highlighted examples of successful applications of AI in various industries, including a startup that created an app to gamify wellness.
