Two high-ranking officials in Mexico City were shot dead by gunmen on a motorcycle in the Moderna neighborhood of the capital Tuesday. Ximena Guzmán, the personal secretary of Mayor Clara Brugada, and José Muñoz, her adviser, were killed in the attack. Brugada called the killings a “direct attack” and vowed to bring those responsible to justice.
The motive behind the attack is still unknown, but authorities are investigating and reviewing surveillance footage. Forensic experts collected evidence at the scene, while police officers stood guard.
Brugada’s ally, President Claudia Sheinbaum, condemned the killings, saying there would be no impunity for those involved. Sheinbaum has faced similar threats in the past, including an attempt on her life by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel in 2020.
Gunmen have targeted Mexican politicians and their aides frequently, particularly at the local level. In recent weeks, several politicians have been killed or attacked in different parts of the country.
The killing of Guzmán and Muñoz is a rare incident in Mexico City, but it highlights the ongoing threat of gang-related violence against public officials.
