The sixth episode of The Last of Us season 2 brought fans a long-awaited treat – an hour-long look at Ellie’s past, featuring three key flashback sequences from the original game. We break down what changed and what stayed the same in these recreated scenes.
In one notable adaptation, Joel’s visit to Ellie is framed differently than in the game. Instead of being a random late night encounter, this scene shows Joel bringing Ellie a birthday gift – a guitar. The environment is darker and more somber in this version, but the events of the scene are largely identical. Both versions of the song “Future Days” feature Troy Baker and Pedro Pascal performing it in a similar manner.
The most lovingly replicated flashback is The Birthday Gift, which sees Joel taking Ellie to the Wyoming Museum of Science and History for her birthday. This sequence is almost a 1:1 clone of what was played in the game. Ellie’s excitement as she explores the museum, including her close encounter with a T-Rex statue, remains largely unchanged.
A recreated version of The Last of Us Part 2’s epilogue also appears in episode six. In this scene, Joel and Ellie hash out their issues and finally arrive at some kind of resolution. While the script is broadly similar to the game’s script, the characters are notably more distressed in the show, with tears and broken voices from both sides.
Overall, these recreated flashbacks showcase the care taken by the showrunners to preserve key moments from Ellie’s past.
