NASA has issued a warning about massive solar flares that could cause blackouts on Earth. The Sun’s most active region is now facing the planet, bringing spectacular auroras and occasional power outages. Scientists predict more intense space weather over the coming days and weeks.
A recent X2.7 solar flare, captured by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory, triggered radio blackouts in parts of the Middle East. The event was so powerful it disrupted high-frequency radio signals for about 10 minutes.
The Sun is currently at its peak activity cycle, known as solar maximum period, due to magnetic pole flips that cause intense storms. NASA warns that ongoing flares and solar eruptions could impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.
The most active region on the Sun is now rotating towards Earth, leading to forecasts of more significant space weather. Up to five sunspot regions are currently facing the planet, with a new region expected to appear soon.
As the Sun’s magnetic poles flip, charged particles from the Sun can create colorful displays known as auroras in the Northern and Southern Lights. Experts warn that this intense period could lead to supercharged auroras.
With space weather forecasts becoming increasingly accurate, NASA is urging people to stay informed about potential disruptions to daily life. The agency advises staying tuned for updates on solar flares and their impact on Earth’s systems.
