Xiaomi Unveils New Chip Technology to Power Future Flagship Smartphones

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is set to unveil its new Xring O1 processor, designed specifically for its flagship smartphones. The company has invested at least 50 billion yuan ($6.9 billion) over the next decade to develop its own chips.

Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun announced the investment in a Weibo post, stating that it will start from 2025. The Xring O1 is based on a 3 nanometer manufacturing process, one of the most advanced on the market. This system-on-chip (SoC) contains various components, including memory and wireless connectivity.

Until now, Xiaomi has relied on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon semiconductors for its flagship smartphones. However, with the Xring O1, the company is taking a step towards self-designed chips. This move comes amid China’s ongoing trade war with the US, which has restricted access to some semiconductors.

Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon has confirmed that Xiaomi will continue to be a supplier of chips. He stated that the company remains a strategic supplier and that Qualcomm’s Snapdragon chips will still be used in Xiaomi flagship smartphones.

Xiaomi is expected to launch new devices powered by the Xring O1 on Thursday, including a smartphone and tablet, as well as an electric car. However, it’s unclear which devices will feature the new chip.
