The “Final Destination” franchise has proven its staying power at the box office, with its sixth installment, “Final Destination: Bloodlines,” topping charts worldwide. The film earned $51 million in ticket sales domestically and matched its international earnings for a global debut of $102 million.
Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye’s experimental thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow” failed to replicate the same enthusiasm, opening outside of the top five with an estimated $3.3 million. Critics and audiences have panned the film, giving it a 13% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a C CinemaScore.
The success of “Final Destination: Bloodlines” revives a 25-year-old franchise that had been dormant since 2011. It follows Warner Bros.’ recent string of hits, including Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie.” Disney’s “Thunderbolts” takes second place with $16.5 million, while Amazon MGM Studios’ “The Accountant 2” rounds out the top five.
Next weekend could see a surge in box office sales as two new films open nationwide: “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and the live-action “Lilo & Stitch.”
