Giant Prehistoric Marine Lizard Unearthed in Gulf Coast Fossil

A team of geologists recently discovered the vertebrae of a massive prehistoric marine lizard, estimated to be 7 inches across. The fossil is believed to belong to Mosasaurus hoffmannii, a species thought to be among the largest ever recorded. If extrapolated to its full size, this animal would have rivaled other marine reptiles and dominated the shallow seas of the Late Cretaceous Period, around 66 million years ago. The discovery was made by James Starnes, a geologist at the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, who described finding the fossil as “awe-struck” and “overwhelming.” This find sheds light on the dangers faced by marine life during the Mesozoic era, which were likely greater than those on land during the same time period.
