A US citizen who has been living in the country with a valid green card is being held by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) due to a decade-old paperwork error. Kasper Juul Eriksen, 32, a welder from Sturgis, Mississippi, was detained on April 15 during a citizenship appointment. His wife, Savannah Eriksen, said they were blindsided by the arrest.
Savannah claimed that the “paperwork miscommunication” occurred in 2015 and resulted in her husband’s detention at an ICE facility in rural Louisiana. The family has a fifth child on the way, with Savannah describing herself as having a “high-risk pregnancy.” She criticized officials for their handling of Eriksen’s case.
Eriksen first came to the US in 2009 as a foreign exchange student and later immigrated with a green card in 2013. He is a welder and has been working on building his family home, which he says sustains their entire income. Savannah launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for her husband’s release.
ICE did not respond to requests for information about Eriksen’s case. Attorneys have filed a petition to seek his release, but it will be up to a judge to decide whether he can return home to his family.
