Crypto giant Coinbase has revealed that at least 69,461 of its customers had personal and financial information stolen during a months-long data breach. The breach began on December 26, 2024, and continued until earlier this month, when the company received a ransom note from the hacker demanding $20 million to delete the data.
The hacker’s demands were met with refusal, and instead, the individual bribed Coinbase customer support workers into accessing customers’ data over several months. The stolen data includes names, email addresses, phone numbers, government-issued identity documents, account balances, and transaction histories. The company confirmed this information in a filing with Maine’s attorney general as required by state law.
