Legendary Actor George Wendt Dies at 76

George Wendt, the beloved American actor best known for his iconic role as Norm Peterson in the popular sitcom Cheers, has passed away at the age of 76. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Wendt appeared in all 275 episodes of Cheers and became a household name through his witty character’s signature phrase “Norm!” and hilarious antics.

Developed by creator Les Charles, Wendt initially played the role of an unemployed accountant with just one line: “Beer!” However, the producers saw potential in him and expanded his character into that of an unemployed accountant, later becoming a painter and decorator. His portrayal of Norm earned Wendt six Emmy nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

Wendt’s career extended beyond Cheers, with notable roles in films like Airplane II: The Sequel and Hart to Hart, as well as guest appearances on TV shows such as Saturday Night Live. He also found success on Broadway, starring in productions like Art, Hairspray, and Elf. In addition to his acting work, Wendt co-authored the book Drinking With George: A Barstool Professional’s Guide to Beer with Jonathan Grotenstein.

Wendt is survived by his wife Bernadette Birkett, whom he married in 1978, their children, stepchildren, grandchildren, and siblings.
