The exploration of Joel and Ellie’s relationship has led the writers of The Last of Us to new questions about Joel’s past. How did he get his programming? How did he develop his savior complex? What inspired him to protect with violence?
In the sixth episode, “The Price,” showrunners Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin, along with Halley Gross, shed light on these unanswered questions through a flashback sequence featuring actor Tony Dalton as Javier Miller, Joel’s father. The episode reveals a pivotal moment in Joel’s childhood when he intervened to protect his brother Tommy from their violent father.
The scene shows an older Joel sitting at the table as his dad returns home, expecting a beating. However, instead of physical punishment, Javier offers Joel a beer and acknowledges that he has done better than his own father. This exchange highlights Joel’s desire not to repeat his parents’ mistakes but also the complexity of his decision-making process.
According to Druckmann, this scene is about both generational trauma and the potential for redemption. “It’s something I thought about when I became a father,” he explains. “Not wanting to repeat our parents’ mistakes but making new ones.”
The episode provides a glimmer of hope for Ellie by highlighting Joel’s capacity for growth and reflection. As Gross notes, when we live with intentionality, we can make healthier choices. However, this requires self-reflection and acknowledging the need to change.
The season 2 finale of The Last of Us airs on HBO next Sunday, May 25, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
