Measles Outbreak Suspected After Shakira Concert at MetLife Stadium

A person who attended a Shakira concert at MetLife Stadium on May 15 is believed to have spread measles, according to health officials. Anyone who was at the stadium between 7:30 p.m. and 1 a.m. may have been exposed to the virus.

Measles symptoms can include a high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that appears within three to five days of symptom onset. Symptoms could develop as late as June 6, health officials said.

It’s essential for anyone who attended the concert to be aware of the risks. The virus can live in an airspace for up to two hours, making it still highly transmissible, especially among those who haven’t been vaccinated.

The U.S. has reported over 1,000 measles cases this year, with most infected individuals having not received vaccinations. To diagnose and treat potential cases, healthcare providers recommend calling ahead of time to prepare a special treatment section.

This incident marks the second suspected measles outbreak in New Jersey last week, following a case at Newark Liberty International Airport’s Terminal B on May 12.
