Eagles’ ‘Tush Push’ Play Wins Vote Amid Safety Concerns

NFL owners have rejected a proposal to ban the “Tush Push,” a signature short-yardage play of the Philadelphia Eagles, after a 22-10 vote. The play, which involves two or three players pushing the quarterback forward in short-yardage situations, was favored by teams including the Ravens, Browns, Lions, Jaguars, Dolphins, Patriots, Saints, Jets, and Titans.

The “Tush Push” has been nearly flawless for the Eagles since 2022, with a success rate of 87%, compared to 71% for the rest of the league. The play has yielded 27 touchdowns and 92 first downs in the past three seasons.

Opponents of the play cited player safety concerns and suggested it was more of a rugby move. However, the NFL lacks conclusive data on its link to increased injury risk. Eagles coach Nick Sirianni defended his team’s use of the play, saying it requires hard work and talent.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and retired center Jason Kelce addressed owners before the vote, dismissing concerns about player safety. Kelce joked that he would gladly return to playing if it meant running 80 “tush pushes” in a season.
