Violet Affleck, the 19-year-old daughter of actors Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, has been working on her college research paper at Yale University. In the Global Health Review, she published a paper titled “A Chronically Ill Earth: COVID Organizing as a Model Climate Response in Los Angeles.” The paper is based on her personal experience during the 2022 Los Angeles wildfires.
Affleck reflected on the disaster and its impact on her mother, writing that Jennifer was shocked by the scale of destruction in their neighborhood. Violet’s family had lived in the Pacific Palisades area, which suffered significant damage from the fires. During the crisis, people discussed the challenges of rebuilding and the costs associated with it.
However, Affleck noted that she found herself in a unique position among those affected: many were concerned about how long the rebuilding process would take and the cost of recovery. In contrast, Violet observed that air quality and health issues seemed to be linked to the crisis. She had spoken publicly about these concerns last summer, advocating for measures such as mask availability and free testing.
Violet’s research paper builds on her earlier advocacy work. As a Yale freshman, she has taken an active role in exploring environmental issues and their impact on public health. Her efforts demonstrate the next generation of leaders taking on climate change challenges.
