Fujifilm has introduced its latest compact camera, the X Half, which embodies the spirit of vintage film photography. With an 18-megapixel “half-frame” sensor and a fixed 32mm-equivalent f/2.8 lens, this pint-size addition to the X-series cameras is designed for casual, fun snapshots. The $849.99 camera features a portrait-oriented viewfinder, two small screens, and can shoot JPGs only, offering a more straightforward experience.
The X Half’s definition of a half-frame differs from traditional film cameras, using a 1-inch-type sensor measuring 8.8mm x 13.3mm instead. Despite this technicality, the camera is aimed at capturing the essence of vintage film photography. Its compact size and weight make it easy to carry, weighing just 8.5 ounces.
The X Half’s analog-inspired features include a dedicated smartphone app with functions like creating two-up diptychs, arranging contact sheets, and applying filters such as light leak effects or expired film looks. However, the camera does not shoot RAW photos, which means the chosen filter and film simulation are permanently baked into the JPG file.
Fujifilm’s X Half is a unique offering that caters to younger photo enthusiasts drawn to vintage film aesthetics. Although its price point of $850 may be prohibitively expensive for some, it promises to provide an immersive experience reminiscent of traditional disposable cameras or 35mm film cameras.
