In a misguided attempt to create a new Indiana Jones franchise, John Krasinski stars as Luke Purdue, an Indiana Jones knock-off in Guy Ritchie’s soulless adventure film. Despite Natalie Portman’s plucky performance as Luke’s disapproving sister Charlotte, the movie is a derivative mess that borrows from other iconic franchises like Bourne and The Thomas Crown Code.
The plot follows Luke and his dad’s old team as they search for the mythical Fountain of Youth, hidden behind clues in six paintings by artists such as Caravaggio and El Greco. However, the film’s attempts at excitement are marred by interminable chases, fisticuffs, and tourist-board jaunts to Bangkok, Vienna, and Cairo.
Domhnall Gleeson shines as Owen Carver, the dying billionaire who funds Luke’s quest, but even his performance can’t save the movie from its overall lack of inspiration. The film’s bright spots are few and far between, with Arian Moayed getting a nice moment when he remarks on his houndstooth suit being “wasted” on most suspects.
Ultimately, ‘The Secret of the Fountain’ will always be surplus to requirements, overshadowed by the iconic Indiana Jones franchise that has stood the test of time.
