Nevada Man Hospitalized with Rare Hantavirus Case

A man under 50 has been hospitalized with the first confirmed case of Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome in Douglas County since June 2021, according to Carson City Health and Human Services. The exposure source is believed to be inhalation or direct contact with rodent droppings, urine, or nesting material during home renovations. Hantavirus, a fatal respiratory infection, causes symptoms such as fatigue, fever, and muscle aches. Thirty-eight percent of those affected die from the disease, according to the CDC. Symptoms can progress to coughing, shortness of breath, and other severe reactions. Those experiencing symptoms are advised to seek medical attention immediately.
