NHS urged to use extra scans for women with dense breasts

A UK-led study has found that using alternative scanning methods could detect more cancers in women with very dense breasts, potentially saving up to 700 lives a year. Researchers say the current mammogram technique can miss cancers in these women because dense breast tissue appears whiter on x-rays, making it harder to spot early-stage cancers. The trial tested enhanced mammograms and fast MRI scans, which detected 17-19 cancers per 1,000 women screened, compared to traditional mammograms detecting only eight per 1,000. With around one in 10 women having very dense breasts, this could lead to the detection of up to 3,500 extra cancers a year.
