Purdue University Fort Wayne has announced the discontinuation of its baseball and softball programs, effective immediately. The decision comes as part of a broader effort to reduce costs and realign the university’s expenses with revenue.
According to Athletic Director Kelley Hartley Hutton, the move is necessary due to inadequate investments in facilities and resources over the years, coupled with the current financial climate. The expected cost savings of up to $1 million will help address budget challenges across the university.
Despite the discontinuation of these programs, PFW remains committed to competing at the highest level of NCAA Division I athletics, including its participation in the Horizon League and Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association.
The university has pledged to support affected student-athletes, including providing scholarships that will be honored and mental health resources. Those who choose to transfer will also be eligible for immediate eligibility at their next institution.
Chancellor Ron Elsenbaumer noted that navigating difficult financial terrain is a challenge faced by many universities nationwide, particularly regional institutions like PFW. The university must align its expenses with revenue to ensure long-term sustainability and provide a first-rate education and experience for students.
As a result of the sponsorship adjustment, Purdue Fort Wayne will now sponsor 14 NCAA Division I programs, allowing the university to maintain its commitment to top-level athletics.
