For over 24 hours, users are experiencing problems with X’s basic functionality, including issues with message loading, timeline updates, and post visibility. The issue began on Thursday afternoon, according to Downdetector, a crowdsourced platform that tracks web outages.
X’s official Engineering account acknowledged the problem, stating that it was caused by a data center outage. However, reports suggest a fire may have broken out at one of X’s leased data centers near Portland, Oregon. The cause of this incident is unclear.
This outage is not the first major issue X has faced since Elon Musk took over as CEO. In March, users worldwide were disconnected from the platform, and in December 2022 and July 2023, large-scale connectivity issues plagued users. More recently, timeline updates stopped working for many users in May.
The company’s recent layoffs have also raised concerns about its ability to maintain stability. Elon Musk reduced X’s workforce by nearly 80% after acquiring the company in 2022. A new wave of layoffs occurred in November 2024, primarily affecting the engineering department. Security experts have warned that improper server configurations may have left the site vulnerable to attacks.
As of now, X’s engineers are working to fix the issue, but users continue to experience problems with the platform.
