Google is continuing its work on an Android desktop mode, which will soon be included in the stable Android 16 AOSP release. The feature, called desktop windowing, was introduced last year as a developer option and allows users to use their device like a computer.
This update will enable desktop windowing on compatible devices when connected to external displays. When this happens, the phone state remains the same, but a new desktop session starts on the external display. Apps can be specific to either the phone or the external display, allowing for a seamless experience.
As of the 25Q3 beta releases, which are part of Android 16 QPR1 Beta, support for external monitors will be available. However, this is not live yet and will be introduced as a developer preview in the Android beta program.
Google recommends that app developers optimize their apps to support external keyboards, mice, trackpads, webcams, microphones, and speakers. This will ensure a smooth user experience when using desktop windowing on compatible devices.
